Growing from a Coin-Operated Rep to a Sales Leader

Today is not the first day you have been called ”coin-operated”.  And today is not the last day you will be called “coin-operated”.

Sales is that type of beast.  They want you to close deals and bring home the bookings.  And when you show that maniacal focus you need to close them, they call you coin-operated.  Do you like you are in a lose-lose situation?

Let me remind you that you were hired as a rep to close deals.  And that is exactly what you should focus on regardless of what they whisper.  Closing deals is your superpower and you should absolutely flex it to the max.

As a leader,  you can influence the organization in more than one positive way; you can make everyone around you better.  You could positively influence processes in the organization by sharing best practices or innovative techniques that make you successful.  Or, you could influence the culture of your organization by showing others how collaborative approaches increase the size of the pie.

Once you establish yourself as a leader, you are bound to get greater responsibilities such as managing teams, mentoring others, and more.  Now you are in a position to break that mold of “coin-operated” and to be a true leader of teams.  Don’t forget where you came from, and more importantly, don’t forget how far you can go with this mindset.
